Abortion and Health Care; Yes or No?
The Stupak amendment may not survive!
In-fighting has already started on this controversial amendment. Here is what Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Democrat of Florida had to say today!
“I, along with the other pro-choice members in the House, intend to push very hard to ensure that language is not included in the final conference product.” In referring to the Stupak amendment. (But the amendment passed! Where was the fight the other night?)
Obama said this:
“I want to make sure that the provision that emerges meets that test — that we are not in some way sneaking in funding for abortions, but, on the other hand, that we’re not restricting women’s insurance choices,” Obama said in an interview with ABC News. Would that be covering all the bases?
Senator Reid opposes abortion except in the cases of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at risk. Passing comprehensive health reform and improving access to health care will likely go a long way towards reducing the rate of unintended pregnancies and the resulting abortions. (How do you figure?)
I expect that any bill that Senator Reid brings to the floor will ensure that no federal funds are used for abortion and that the conscience rights of providers and health care facilities like Catholic Hospitals are protected.
So now the rumble in the House and Senate will be over abortion. Looks for a lot of Senators to make ambiguous statements on this issue as it may dominate the discussion and take away from the debate on the bill itself. Elections are only a year away and folks aren’t going to be forgetting this vote anytime soon!
