Spirited CA GOP Senatorial Debate
With a studio full of media, and three very ripe senatorial candidates ready to have at it over national security, defense and foreign affairs, the 1380 KTKZ studio was the source for the first California GOP U. S. Senatorial Debate.
The audio that follows features participants: Republican CA Assembly Member Chuck DeVore, former CEO of HP Carly Fiorina and former Republican House Representative Tom Campbell.
I will be posting a few of my thoughts and behind the scenes note later tonight, and over the weekend. For those wanting to listen here are the four segments of today’s statewide debate.
The debate opened with former Rep. Tom Campbell setting the tone.
“I called for this debate today so that both of my opponents can bring up absolutely any charge they want. Air it, and let me respond to it. But there’s no place for calling me anti-Semitic, then denying it. That whispering campaign, that “silent slander” stops today.”
“Carly Fiorina’s lead campaign manager consultant was caught doing it. One of two things are true. Either her campaign consultant slandered me by calling me an anti-Semit; or Bruce McPherson, our state’s former Secretary of State, a man of impeccable credibility and reputation for honesty, is really an irresponsible person who makes up outlandish charges. I know which of those two possibilities is overwhelmingly more likely Ms. Fiorina, and so do the voters.”
“Your campaign attacks on me have already been labeled by the San Jose Mercury News an “unfair”, “misleading”, “ridiculous,” and that you are “likely to play fast and loose with facts.” Today, that stops.”

If their is another debate I would like to know what the candidates views are on illegal immigration into this country and how they can stop US companies from hiring illegal aliens. Second I would like to know there views of energy, both oil and nuclear.
As far as the debate today, I would have to give it to Chuck DeVore.
The main thing I got out this debate was that Carly Fiorina has no respect for the other candidates or the facts. Chuck DeVore was the winner to me. His points were backed up with facts. He is the kind of leader we need in Washington to get our country back.
I am already sick of the mud slinging, and this campaign has barely started! I was hoping to hear a more detailed discussion of the issues, but Carlyfornia was more interested in attacking than answering questions, and she seemed determined to take over the discussion. This is the US Senate – not Jerry Springer! Glad to have a chance to hear the candidates…I think.
I am concerned based on what I heard here today that Tom Campbell is not being completely honest. There is something about the way he behaved in this debate that rang liberal. Did anyone else pick up on that? His quiet, bitter responses all had a twist of “I hate you Carly” and “I hate you Dad.” His voice a little effeminate, and he even ended one of his responses with “yes, thank you.” I mean he just doesn’t sound like a strong fiscal conservative with the toughness that it will take to beat Boxer.
I would like to see the candidates answer the GOOOH.COM candidate screening questions. It would be a great way to clarify and determine what type of senator Ms. Fiorina, Mr. DeVore or Mr. Campbell would eventually be.
I didn’t like how Campbell said he voted against increasing aid to Israel because it was taking money from aid to Africa. “taking money from the poorest countries of the world” with no hint of irony.
Hey pal, it isn’t africa’s money! It is our money. And the US is the biggest debtor nation in the world! So in reality just by voting for any of this foreign aid to any country you are actually taking money from the poorest country in the world.
no views revealed. how does that work? what’s the point then? am i missing something? why bother to listen, if their views are kept “top secret” ? i thought that “failure to disclose” was a liberal disease.
p.s.–i guess i was a little naive to hope that either party would play to the citizens (reveal views on immigration, etc). sound like these folks have been taking transparency 101 from J. McCain & company.
Our gubernatorial and senatorial Republican Primary races have degenerated into catfights. Candidates are spending more time whining about, or denying, shots that are perceived to be in violation of some imaginary geneva convention of politics than the real issues. Republican voters are entitled to better, namely a debate on the substantive issues.
Candidates: If you cannot bear the heat, get the heck out of the kitchen.
Is the allusion to “catfights” politically incorrect?
It appeared to me that Carly was represented much more so than either Tom Campbell or Chuch DeVore. It’s a real shame the two men never had the time allowed to them that Carly was and that she took by butting in on both the other statements. Chuck DeVore won was the winner to me.
Actually my producer kept track of the time; Tom Campbell had more minutes of dialogue than the other two candidates. Carly had the second most, and Chuck DeVore was very pleased with the format and structure of the debate. DeVore was ill and had little voice for the debate, he chose to keep his powder dry for impactful statements. I respectfully disagree with your view, thanks.
